New antibacterial coatings for Ti based implants

Supervisor: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Regenerative medicine is currently a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. The main goal is to repair, restore, regenerate tissues and organs that have been damaged as a result of disease, congenital defect or trauma as well as the result of the aging process. This research project focuses on the development new multifunctional composite materials based on titanium and their application in regenerative medicine. The novel materials were produced by selective laser melting / sintering (SLM / SLS). Additionally materials were post-production surface modified in order to enhance antibacterial properties and bioactivity. The coatings were deposited with layer by layer (LbL) technique. The research conducted at the FAU Institute of Biomaterials includes the assessment of the antibacterial activity and bioactivity of the fabricated materials. The fellowship is financed by The European Virtual Institute on Knowledge-based Multifunctional Materials AISBL (KMM-VIN).
