Antibacterial and bioactive coatings deposited via electrophoretic deposition for orthopedic implants
Collaborators: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Dr. Qaisar Nawaz
The worldwide market of orthopedic implants is estimated to reach at USD 66,636 million by the year 2025 due to the increased rate of chronic diseases, trauma, and age factors. In this context, it is important to design antibacterial and bioactive surfaces of implanted devices. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a low-cost and room temperature processing technique which can architect multifunctional, i.e. bioactive, antibacterial, biocompatible, and corrosion resistant coatings on complex shape implants [1].
Accordingly, the present project funded by the British Council, with the collaboration of Institute of Space Techniology, Pakistan, University Sheffield, UK, and the FAU Institute of Biomaterials, aims to develop multifunctional coatings on Ti and Mg implants. In particlar, multistructured coatings consisting of the first layer of PEEK/mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles and the second layer of sodium alginate/natural herb compound will be deposited on Ti implants. The coatings will be chacterized in terms of bioactive and antibacterial behavioud.
