Fabrication and in vitro/in vivo osteogenesis of bioadaptive drug delivery coatings on Mg alloy implants

Surface modification of implants like magnesium alloy with bioactive coatings containing therapeutic drugs is an effective approach for treating bone defects [1]. In detail, the aim of the present program funded by DAAD, being carried out in collaboration with the School of Life Sciences, Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, China (collaborators: Dr. Qiang Cheng, former PhD student in our institute, Ms Hongfei Qi (PhD student), and Prof. Tingli Lu), is to fabricate chitosan based composite coatings by electrophoretic deposition following our previous results [2]. An added challenge of the project is to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy substrates by the application of the coating [3], in addition to achieving a controlled release of the drug incorporated in the coating. We collaborate in this project also with the research group of Prof. S. Virtanen at the FAU Institute of Surface Science and Corrosion.
