Electrofabrication of chitosan films/ porous patches for biomedical applications

Chitosan is a well-known natural biopolymer. This polysaccharide is a promising candidate for different biomedical applications due to its biodegradability, intrinsic antibacterial and cytocompatible nature [1]. Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a versatile and widely used process that can be carried out at room temperature [2]. In this study the EPD process will be used to manufacture chitosan based free-standing porous patches modified with therapeutic ions and phytotherapeutic agents. A recent study found increased antibacterial activity and improved mechanical properties of copper(II)-chitosan complex based coatings obtained by EPD [3]. The characterization of the fabricated 3D shapes will take part in this study.
