Investigation of biphasic scaffolds for osteochondral defect repair
Supervisor: Lisa Schoebel, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini
The healing response of bone occurs after a fracture. However, if the bone loss exceeds a critical threshold, it is no longer able to perform complete self-repair [1]. In this case, external support by scaffolds is required which can efficiently be manufactured by additive manufacturing [2]. In this project, the aim is to fabricate biphasic scaffolds for osteochondral defect repair using poly(lactic acid)-bioactive glass (PLA-BG) composites [3] as the bone part and alginate di-aldehyde-gelatin (ADA-GEL) hydrogels as the cartilage part. The final scaffolds will be investigated regarding their 3D-printability, chemical and mechanical properties as well as bioactive properties and cell-material interactions
