Synthesis and characterization of 45S5 bioactive glass based scaffolds with biomolecule releasing capability

Bioactive glasses (BGs) are suitable materials for bone regeneration applications. It has been established that the presence of silicon in bioactive glasses has an effect in the osteogenesis process [1]. The intrinsic biological properties of BGs can be improved by the incorporation of therapeutic biomolecules which are aimed to be locally released [2]. In this study, the scaffolds will be prepared using the well-known foam replica method [3]. Bioactivity, antibacterial activity and cytocompatibility of the produced 45S5 BG scaffolds coated with mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles, loaded with antibiotic drugs, will be investigated. This project is carried out in the framework of the I.DEAR „Materials“ student exchange program between the Institute of Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and INTEMA, National University of Mar del Plata, Argentina, funded by the Argentine-German University Centre (CUAA-DAHZ). Supervisor at INTEMA is Prof. Josefina Ballarre.
