Biopolymer coated bioactive glass scaffolds for bone regeneration
Supervisor: Dr. Vivian Ines Dos Santos, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini
Bioactive glass is a biocompatible material that has applications in tissue engineering due to its ability to promote tissue regeneration. This project focuses on the development and characterisation of gelatin-coated bioactive glass-polymer scaffolds for bone regeneration. The scaffolds are 3D-printed from a mixture of sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and bioactive glass. The scaffolds are then coated with gelatin loaded with essential oils, known for their antibacterial properties. The scaffolds are characterized in terms of mechanical properties, degradation in simulated body fluid, bioactivity and cytocompatibility.
