Mesoporous glass coatings with therapeutic ions releasing capability

The aim of this research project is the design, processing and characterisation of novel mesoporous glass coatings exhibiting therapeutic ions releasing capability. A controlled amount of specific metallic ions will be introduced during the glass synthesis in order to impart antibacterial effects, in addition to bone formation ability and angiogenesis effects [1, 2]. Electrophoretic deposition [3] will be utilized to develop multifunctional bioactive coating on different substrates (stainless steel, Ti and Mg alloys) for biomedical applications. The novel coatings will be characterised in terms of morphology, chemical composition, strength adhesion to the substrates. Moreover, bioactivity and antibacterial tests will be carried out to verify the bacteriostatic/bactericidal effects imparted by the releasing ions. This research project is being carried out in the framework of the European Training Network (ETN) (Horizon 2020) project: „Advanced glasses, Composites And Ceramics for High growth Industries (CoACH)“.
