Mesoporous silicate bioactive glasses as antibacterial materials

This research project is being carried out in the framework of the Marie-Curie Innovative Training Network-European Industrial Doctorate (ITN-EID) (Horizon 2020): „Drug-Free Antibacterial Hybrid Biopolymers for Medical Applications (HyMedPoly)“ in close collaboration with colleagues in Lucideon Limited UK and with the other academic partners in HyMedPoly. Highly ordered mesoporous silica and mesoporous bioactive silicate glasses will be made by adapting sol-gel and evaporation induced self-assembly processes. The novel glasses will be tested in their cytotoxicity and antibacterial potential, particularly in relation to their ion releasing capability. The characterization studies involve the use electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface characterisation methods (SXP, SIMS, contact angle, zeta potential), BET and specific structural and chemical analysis techniques such as XRF, XRD, SAXS, WAXS. The project is co-supervised by Dr Mark Cresswell at Lucideon Ltd. UK.
