Bioadaptive coatings on magnesium alloys

Mg and Mg-alloys are promising bio-resorbable implant materials due to their outstanding combination of good mechanical properties, biocompatibility and degradability in the human body. The benefit of such materials is huge, as no second operation for the removal of the implant is needed. The main disadvantage for the application of Mg and Mg-alloys in the biomedical field is, however, the excessive corrosion these materials exhibit after implantation, combined with an increase of pH and the formation of hydrogen. Application of coatings is a convenient approach to tackle this problem [1]. The aim of this project is the development of a bio-adaptive coating system on Mg-alloys consisting mainly of a biopolymer and bioactive glass. The formed layers will be investigated concerning their interaction with proteins and cells, their influence on Mg corrosion and their performance in vivo. The project is funded by DFG and it is a collaborative effort with Prof. S. Virtanen (Institute of Surface Science and Corrosion) and Prof. F. Witte (Charité, Berlin)
